In spring of 2023, Surveillance Technology, Inc. (STI) was hired as a subcontractor to work on the DOT’s maintenance construction of John’s Pass Bridge, which accommodates traffic to and from Treasure Island and Madeira Beach. The moveable bridge opens on demand 24/7, unlike most other Pinellas County drawbridges, where openings are restricted to a time schedule. It is imperative that the bridge tender has clear views day and night, to ensure all pedestrian and roadway traffic is clear before opening the bridge. To provide these critical views, STI installed six weatherproof IP 4K security cameras, along with an 8 channel 4K NVR and new cable. Footage can be viewed from the bridgehouse in real time on a 55” monitor. All equipment used in this project had to offer the highest level of weather resistance, given its unrelenting exposure to sun and salt water. The cameras have a special powder coating designed to withstand the salt air, while the IP65-rated enclosures are dust tight and protect against condensation, foul weather, and sea spray. Surveillance Technology has worked on a number of local drawbridges, and respects the importance of reliable clarity and the grueling demands of Florida weather for these unique projects.
